It spreads knowledge, promotes cultural values and entertains the community, especially the youth. We are currently touring a selection of street and shadow puppetry shows and puppet workshops. Chinese shadow puppetry also passes on information such as cultural history, social beliefs, oral traditions and local customs. The relevant skills are handed down in families, in troupes, and from master to pupil. Some puppeteers are professional, while others are amateurs performing during slack farming seasons. ![]() This art form involves performers manipulating puppets made from the leather of donkeys or oxen from behind a curtain. Shadow plays are performed by large troupes with seven to nine performers and smaller troupes of only two to five, primarily for entertainment or religious rituals, weddings and funerals and other special occasions. Shadow play has a history of more than 2,000 years in China. Many puppeteers also carve the puppets, which can have between twelve and twenty-four moveable joints. ![]() Combining shadows of classic animals such as birds and elephants with famous celebrities, well known characters and magic tricks all set to music to create a one of a kind performance suitable for all nationalities and age groups. They master special techniques such as improvisational singing, falsetto, simultaneous manipulation of several puppets, and the ability to play various musical instruments. This act have taken the vaudeville art of shadow puppets and made it into something contemporary and new. Many elder shadow puppetry artists can perform dozens of traditional plays, which are orally transmitted or found in written form. Flat images are manipulated by the puppeteers between a bright light and a translucent screen, on the other side of which sits the audience. With puppet theatre in the North and throughout the UK and childrens entertainment in Yorkshire and Lancashire, our hilarious, colourful and anarchic style continues to thrill audiences across the nation.
